How to Flatten a Rug
Sometimes new rugs may arrive with creases or curled edges due to packaging. Here are a few effective methods to help your rug lay flat:
Method 1: Back-Roll or Reverse Roll
Gently roll the rug in the opposite direction of the curl and let it sit for a few hours.
This helps to counteract the fold and encourages the rug to flatten naturally.
Note: Most creases will relax and flatten out within 1–2 weeks after unrolling.
Method 2: Use Heavy Objects
Place heavy items like books, plant pots, or furniture on the curled or wrinkled areas.
Leave them in place for several hours (or overnight) to help press the rug flat.
Method 3: Apply Steam or Heat
If the rug still doesn't flatten, you can use steam or gentle heat to release the wrinkles and creases.
Steps to steam your rug:
-
Lightly dampen the curled corners of the rug and allow them to air dry.
-
If needed, cover the affected area with a damp towel.
-
Using a steamer or iron on steam setting, gently press over the towel in quick, short bursts.
Avoid prolonged contact to prevent damaging the towel or the rug.
-
After steaming, reshape the fibers by hand or with a brush, then let the rug lie flat to dry.
✅ Tips:
-
Always steam from the back side of the rug, not the front.
-
Avoid soaking the rug fibers.
-
This method is suitable for synthetic, cotton, and wool rugs.
-
Be extra careful with synthetic rugs — use low heat, as high temperatures may melt the fibers.
-
When in doubt, consult your rug supplier for specific care advice.
Is my USTIDE rug non-slip?
Most of our rugs feature a non-slip latex backing, designed to stay securely in place on laminate, hardwood, and other smooth floor surfaces—no additional rug pad needed. This makes them safe and practical for high-traffic areas, especially in homes with kids or pets.
Note: Some rug styles may not include a non-slip backing. Please check the product description for details before purchasing.
To ensure the best performance, make sure the bottom of the rug remains dry at all times.
Is my USTIDE rug machine-washable?
Yes, almost all of our rugs are machine washable, you can click on the washable rugs page to choose to buy or check the product page to see if it says machine washable.
However, it depends upon the size of the machine. For best results, we recommend a minimum washer size of 5.5+ cubic feet for an 8'x10' rug.
